MILWAUKEE – On Saturday, President Trump offered to extend temporary DACA protections for immigrant youth and TPS protections for refugee families in exchange for Congress agreeing to provide $5.7 billion to fund more walls along the US-Mexico border. Voces de la Frontera issued the following statement condemning the proposal:
“This is not a good-faith proposal since it was Trump who took away DACA and TPS protections for immigrant families in the first place,” said Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera. “Trump must immediately restore DACA and TPS protections. Trump and Mitch McConnell must stop holding immigrant families and federal employees and their families hostage to their hateful agenda. We call on Senator Johnson to step up and demand a vote to end this shutdown.
“We urge the Democrats to hold the line – not one dollar for more militarization along the border and detention centers for immigrant families and children, much less for a bigoted, hateful wall. We should be cutting funding for ICE and Customs and Border Patrol and holding them accountable for their abuses, which have led to the deaths of refugee children.”
