Voces de la Frontera Condemns State Violence Against Teachers in Oaxaca
Milwaukee – Voces de la Frontera issued the following statement in support of the protest action held Friday night in Milwaukee outside of the Mexican Consulate in solidarity with Oaxaca.
“As an organization of students and teachers organizing to resist efforts to privatize public education in Milwaukee, Voces de la Frontera condemns the use of state violence in Oaxaca against teachers that has resulted in the death of at least 8 people who were protesting efforts to strip teachers of their rights and privatize schools. We call on Secretary of State Kerry to carry out an independent investigation into the use of state violence against teachers in Oaxaca, especially in the wake of international attention to the human rights crisis in Mexico highlighted by the brave family members of the 43 disappeared students in Guerrero. The people of both the United States and Mexico have the right to hold their governments accountable when their human rights are violated. The high level of collaboration between the United States government and the Mexican government in trade and military agreements means that Secretary Kerry has an obligation to investigate these horrific acts.”
