SHEBOYGAN, WISCONSIN – On Monday night, the Sheboygan Common Council voted 14-1 to defeat a resolution that would have directed the Sheboygan Police Department to detain community members for Immigration. The vote came as over 500 community members packed three floors of City Hall and rallied outside after Voces de la Frontera’s Sheboygan Chapter called for a mobilization to defeat the measure.
“Last night, I felt that our voices were heard,” said Abril Moreno, a student at Sheboygan North High School and member of Voces de la Frontera’s student arm Youth Empowered in the Struggle. “What we experienced yesterday was like an immigrant’s dream accomplished. When I saw my mom running downstairs from the City Hall office, I broke into tears because it was an emotional feeling winning this victory. We are committed to continuing to organize to advance positive change for our families in Sheboygan.”
“The turnout and energy was really inspiring,” said Kate Krause, the owner of Paradigm Coffee and Music. “I’m relieved that our community and local government is showing up to shut down the short-sighted, hateful rhetoric that our current presidential administration is unearthing and feeding.”
