MADISON, WI-
Beginning today, hundreds of thousands of undocumented youth will be able to apply to stay in the United States without fear of deportation for at least two years, through the Obama administration’s “Consideration of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals” form. Today marks the beginning of a new chapter & new hope in their lives.
Join Voces de la Frontera, Youth Empowered in the Struggle (YES) and others at the WI State Capitol at 1 pm for a youth-organized rally to mark the release of Deferred Action application for relief for undocumented youth. Speakers will be relief-eligible youth from Youth Empowered in the Struggle (YES). They will publicly thank President Obama for taking action, share stories and speeches about their own experiences as undocumented students in the US.
Students will also talk about their plans to apply for deferred action, and hold community forums in Milwaukee and Racine to educate their peers on the application process.
“Being able to apply for a work permit is an amazing opportunity for me. Now I can contribute to my family and save up for my college tuition,” says Janeth Zorrilla, an undocumented student leader of YES and a senior at St. Thomas More High School. .
“This is a great day. It is a testament to the courage of immigrant youth who have tirelessly fought to realize the American dream and be fully integrated into the fabric of society. It is a victory for America as much as for the young people who have given their talent and dreams to achieve a more just society,” says Christine Neumann-Ortiz, executive director of Voces de la Frontera.
