Immigration Attorney

Voces de la Frontera has chapters in Milwaukee, Racine, Madison, Green Bay/Fox Cities, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Waukesha, Walworth County, Kenosha, and West Bend. Voces’ student arm is called Youth Empowered in the Struggle.

Goal of the Position

The position will work with staff and volunteers to expand Voces’ BIA accredited legal services, asylum services,  citizenship clinics, labor rights services, and multilingual legal services to City of Milwaukee immigrants and refugees and our statewide chapters. The position will work on policy initiatives that better integrate and support  immigrants and refugees in our community, and develop and or review multilingual community education materials on Know Your Rights or other issues. 

Job Description/Responsibilities

  • Train key staff and volunteers to screen and prepare immigration applications and increase the numbers of BIA accredited persons. Applications include asylum initial applications, family petitions, consular processing, adjustment of status, U-visa, VAWA, removal defense cases, and deferred action labor rights.
  • Review cases to identify simple cases that can be handled by trained volunteers and those that are more complicated and might need legal referral and representation.
  • Meet regularly, coordinate and network with Voces’ pro bono attorneys’ that are part of our referral list and legal clinic to maximize legal services and impact
  • Train attorneys, volunteers and staff for large scale legal clinics.
  • Supervise law students, paralegals, and legal fellows to build Voces’ legal capacity
  • Provide ongoing staff training to assess individuals’ eligibility for immigration benefits at consultations.
  • In some cases, provide legal representation for clients in immigration court proceedings and other legal proceedings related to immigration and refugee status.
  • Perform legal research and regularly monitor developments in immigration law and labor law
  • Conduct community presentations on immigration topics such as “Know Your Rights
  • Serve as legal/policy expert in coalitions with external partners
  • Strategically, creatively, and boldly use plaintiff-drive, community-grounded impact litigation in combination and partnership with Voces other core strategies of policy advocacy, communications, and movement building to advance Voces vision and mission.
  • Collaborate with staff across the organization, including the communications, essential workers department, youth and adult organizing departments.
  • Advance Voces legislative advocacy by providing legal analysis and technical assistance to Voces colleagues, government officials and staff, the media, and organizers. Provide support to other staff on issues of subject-matter expertise.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: JD Required
  • Written and oral fluency in English/Spanish required
  • At least 2 years’ experience working in immigration legal services, immigration court
  • Possess advanced interpersonal communication skills and passion for social and economic justice, and sensitivity to challenges of the immigrant community
  • Sensitivity to the needs and legal issues affecting people of diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to stay organized, manage a high volume workload, and work under strict deadlines
  • Strong proofreading and detail-oriented research and writing skills
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from members, clients and the general public
  • Ability to manage and organize multiple tasks simultaneously and independently, often under pressure and in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be proactive, a self-starter with a solution-oriented mindset, and a willingness to take initiative
  • Well organized with high attention to details and deliver accurate work within strict deadlines
  • Ability to manage and prioritize time and responsibilities, including the ability to work independently
  • Adapt to change and respond to unexpected issues;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Monthly $50 stipend to personal phone if willing to utilize it for work purposes, in accordance with the Voces de la Frontera employee policy handbook.
  • Paid-time off includes: 80 hours vacation, 16 hours personal time, 64 hours sick time, 24 hours bereavement and paid holidays all in accordance with the Voces de la Frontera employee policy handbook.
  • 401K benefits based on longevity (eligible after 6 months of employment)

Salary Ranges from $70,000 – $80,000 based on experience.

Accountant

Voces de la Frontera (VDLF) is the largest grassroots Latinx membership organization in Wisconsin and a national leader in the Immigrant and Workers’ Rights Movements. Led by immigrant workers and students, Voces works to protect and expand civil and workers’ rights through leadership, development, community organizing, and collective empowerment. VDLF has chapters in Milwaukee, Racine, Madison, Green Bay/Fox Cities, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Waukesha, Walworth County, Kenosha, and West Bend. Voces also has a student arm called Youth Empowered in the Struggle (YES) and a 501c4 sister organization Voces de la Frontera Action (VDLFA).

Location: Our central office at 733 W Historic Mitchell St. Milwaukee, WI 53204 

Employment Type: Full-time, 40 hours/week

Position Summary:

The accountant plays a critical role in supporting the organization’s financial management, operations, and fundraising activities. This position involves maintaining accurate records of all financial transactions, managing grant tracking and deposits, and assisting with regular reconciliations and reporting. The individual will collaborate closely with the executive director and finance team to ensure compliance with operational and financial policies and support the smooth running of key programs. The successful candidate will contribute to the overall financial integrity and success of the organization while supporting key internal processes and external fundraising initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage entries and assist with reports for grant tracking on QuickBooks
  • Track all C3 and C4 deposits and take them to the bank weekly
  • Manage monthly reconciliation (all bank account entries, grants, sustainer memberships, membership splits, withdrawal, ach transactions, online donations, bank deposits)
  • Manages all receivables and assists with payables as needed.
  • Regular and timely usage of administrative and staff communication channels (email, Signal, text, phone)
  • Work closely with the executive director and finance team to ensure compliance and oversight of operations requests
  • Incorporate new systems to facilitate programs such as Square, Divvy and bill.com
  • Assist staff with fundraising campaigns (such as the Gala, May Day, and Annual Assembly)
  • Create and manage tracking sheets to monitor donations
  • Data entry to organizational databases including QuickBooks and Every Action (internal member database)
  • Attend and support major Voces de la Frontera events and campaign actions
  • Assist with logistics on all events
  • Create financial reports for monthly board meetings budgets
  • Track all expenses and receipts for all financial accounts
  • Monthly meetings with development to classify and track grants
  • Create invoices to obtain funds from grantors
  • Be vigilant of any suspicious fraudulent activity
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Accounting background with prior experience managing financial records, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience with Quickbooks Required
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work flexibly in a high paced, changing work environment
  • Knowledge of Microsoft and Google tools
  • Excellent written, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Have respect for and the ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
  • Experience with immigrant rights organizing preferred

Executive Director's Assistant

Executive Director’s Assistant (FT)

Voces de la Frontera is a national leader in the movement for immigrant and worker rights and the largest grassroots Latinx membership organization in Wisconsin. Led by low-wage immigrant workers and students, Voces works to protect and expand civil rights and workers’ rights through leadership development, community organizing, and collective empowerment. Voces de la Frontera has chapters in cities across Wisconsin. Voces’ student arm is called Youth Empowered in the Struggle.

As an Executive Assistant at Voces de la Frontera Action, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the Executive Director in various administrative tasks. Your responsibilities will include scheduling and communication, meeting coordination and travel arrangements, board member engagement, financial tracking and reporting, and communication management.

Responsibilities:

  1. Scheduling and Communication:
    • Manage the executive director’s schedule efficiently.
    • Arrange meetings, draft communications, and ensure timely follow-ups.
    • Schedule staff check-ins, board meetings, campaign meetings, and meetings with national partners and funders.
    • Ensure effective communication to all community members.
  2. Meeting Coordination and Travel Arrangements
    • Provide support during meetings attended by the executive director.
    • Coordinate travel arrangements as necessary.
    • Collect and organize monthly program reports for presentation at board meetings.
  3. Board Member Engagement:
    • Confirm board member attendance for monthly meetings.
    • Coordinate interpreters and Zoom logistics for board meetings.
    • Assist with organizational committee meetings and board member orientations.
    • Gather and share monthly staff program reports, agendas, and minutes with the board in a timely manner.
    • Archive meeting documents and finances for auditing purposes.
  4. Financial Tracking and Reporting:
    • Track and report expenditures on behalf of the executive director.
    • Prepare necessary documentation for expenditure receipts.
    • Understand compliance rules related to the executive director’s political activities.
  5. Communication Management:
    • Act as a liaison and demonstrate excellent communication skills.>
    • Maintain confidentiality on sensitive information.
    • Flag issues or opportunities to the Executive Director as needed.
    • Provide regular updates to the Executive Director on schedules, meetings, and tasks through weekly meetings and daily check-ins.
  6. Email management
    • Sort and filter through Director’s inbox
    • Flag all time sensitive and grant related emails
    • Respond on behalf of the Director to emails if needed
    • Implement system to have Director read and respond to emails efficiently

Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of experience in administrative support
  • Commitment to immigrant and worker rights.
  • Fluent in Spanish and English required.
  • Possess a reliable vehicle, car insurance, and a valid driver’s license.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and other basic computer programs.
  • Commit to continuous learning and development.
