ALERT: Wisconsin Republicans to Hold Hearing on Anti-Immigrant Bill Tuesday
Inspired by Donald Trump, Republicans are pushing forward a bill to make police and local officials to ask people about their immigration status
Republicans in Madison are holding a public hearing tomorrow, December 15th, at 9:30am in Room 400 Northeast of the Capitol on Trump-inspired anti-immigrant legislation.
Can you join us to testify against this legislation and in support of Wisconsin’s immigrant communities?
The bill, AB 450, is a racist, anti-immigrant bill that could force local police and government officials to ask people about their immigration status and arrest undocumented people so they can be deported, including victims of crime. Among other outrages, the bill could keep undocumented victims of crime, domestic violence survivors, and their loved ones from contacting the police.
In 2013, Voces de la Frontera member Salvador Flores was robbed at gunpoint in his front yard. It was a traumatizing experience for him and his family. “It’s very scary going to the police when you’re undocumented,” says Salvador’s wife Rafaela. “You’re afraid they’re going to ask you if you have papers and you’ll get deported. The police shouldn’t be asking about people’s immigration status. All community members need to be able to trust the police so they can report crimes and be open about what is going on. We are all safer when all people can report crimes.”
The family was able to safely tell the police what had happened, in part because the Milwaukee Police Department has a public policy of not asking victims of crimes about their immigration status. AB 450 would make MPD’s policy illegal.
We need you to attend the hearing or call representatives in support of thousands of community members like the Flores family!

This bill will encourage racial profiling, take authority away from local police, and make us all less safe by making many members of our communities afraid to report crimes. We need your support! Thank you, and remember, ¡la unión hace la fuerza!
Sincerely,
Voces de la Frontera
