National Convening to Organize the May 1st General Strike

On April 1st and 2nd, organizers and activists from across the country will gather in US House Speaker Paul Ryan’s district in southeastern Wisconsin to plan for the May 1st General Strike and develop a longer-term strategy for our movements based on collective economic power.

Immigrant communities organized Day Without Immigrants general strikes nationally in 2006 and in Wisconsin in 2016 that defeated anti-immigrant legislation. In February 2017, immigrant community members organized work stoppages and business closures nationwide against immigration raids. Voces de la Frontera organized a strike in Wisconsin on February 13th against Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke’s decision to enroll in 287g.

This convening will bring together organizations to follow the lead of the community members and deepen a strategy of  bold action based on our collective economic power.
