License scammers move in

Local scammers have been quick to try and take advantage of people who have lost out under the new law by offering worthless ‘drivers licenses’ and ‘I.D. cards’ for a hefty price.

Voces de la Frontera has found an increasing number of postcard ads circulating in the Milwaukee area

that offer ‘photo credentials’. These kind of phony plastic cards are worse than useless – they could actually create big problems for anyone found carrying them.

The most common scam involves so-called ‘international drivers licenses’ , a fake version of an International Drivers Permit (IDP), which is supported by the United Nations. A real IDP is simply a translation of the information found on a genuine driver’s license for someone travelling overseas and has no value on its own. A person cannot obtain a genuine IDP if they do not already hold a valid driver’s license and the two documents must always be presented together.

Under U.S. law, IDPs can only legally be issued by two reputable organizations - the Automobile Association of America and the National Automobile Club - and cost about $10.

However, many scams use misinformation about ‘international drivers licenses’ to charge large sums for phony cards.

The Federal Trade Commission says that if someone stopped by police presents such a card as proof of identity and authorization to drive they may be arrested.
