National Labor Leader to Keynote Voces de la Frontera Gala, Awards Ceremony

Ana Avendaño, recently named by AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka as Assistant to the President on Immigration and Community Action, will serve as keynote speaker at Voces de la Frontera's "Reaching for the American Dream" gala, this Thursday evening in Milwaukee, as part of the organization's celebration of recent legislative victories for immigrant youth and their families in Wisconsin.

The gala will also honor the winners of Voces de la Frontera's youth and adult activist awards. Voces is Wisconsin's leading immigrant rights group, which organizes communities to overcome injustice and build a better world.

"We are thrilled to have a respected and important leader, Ana Avendaño, join us to celebrate our hard-fought victories," said Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Voces de la Frontera Executive Director. "We have more work to do, but we remain energized by what we have been able to accomplish through our perseverance and collective efforts."

Ms. Avendaño, who is scheduled to speak at 8:00 p.m., previously served as Associate General Counsel and Director of the Immigrant Worker Program at the AFL-CIO. Prior to her remarks, the gala will celebrate the recent instate tuition victory for immigrant youth and their families; making Wisconsin the 11th state in the nation to stand up for education equity. The tribute will include a brief video of youth organizing and highlights of Voces' mobilizations since late 2005 to the present.

Award winners being honored Thursday include:
  • The Richard Oulahan Youth Activist Award - Yazmin Romero and Valeria Gonzalez
  • The Joe Rody Labor Activist Award - Michael Rosen, President of American Federation of Teachers (AFT) 212; Pete Knotek, President of Racine Education Association (REA); and John Rosenow, Board Chairman of the Council on Rural Initiatives.
