Students claim Martin Luther King Day victory

June 17, 2009
After three years of organizing, Racine area student groups Students United in the Struggle (SUITS) and Students United for Immigrant Rights (SUFRIR) are excited to the see Martin Luther King Day as a school holiday for the 2009-2010 school year. The student groups, with the support of the community groups Voces de la Frontera and the Racine Branch NAACP have been speaking at school board meetings, attending rallies and collecting petitions on the issue since 2006.

Outgoing president of SUITS and recent Horlick graduate Jessika White sees this as a nice graduation gift. "It took us three years to win it, but I'm excited because Dr. King deserves it. He deserves a day of recognition in Racine like he has in other cities in Wisconsin. I'm proud to have been part of this victory."

Gabe Coronado of SUFRIR, a group dedicated to immigrant rights, sees the issue as important for all students of all races. His group also organized for the holiday with SUITS. He stresses, "this is important because Dr. King wasn't just fighting for African Americans but for Latinos and Asians and anyone facing injustice. It's important to have the day to remember his legacy and to inspire us to keep working for a better community."

Local community groups are also happy to see this change take effect. Maria Morales, Racine Coordinator for Voces de la Frontera, says, "As a lifelong activist, a community member and admirer of King, I want to congratulate the students on their victory. We have supported you throughout the campaign and Dr. King would be very proud of all of you." Michael Shields of the Racine branch NAACP also commented, "This is a great victory for RUSD for the students and the teachers and for the memory of Martin Luther King. Thank you to SUITS, SUFRIR, RUSD, the REA, Voces de la Frontera and the Racine Branch NAACP for making this a reality."
