Budget Stalemate: In-State tuition should not be held to ransom

October 16, 2007

Wisconsin students will join Wednesday's rally at the state Capitol to try and prevent a take-away in budget negotiations that would hurt successful students.

Governor Doyle's proposed compromise, voted down Monday, included plans to offer tuition at In-State rates to high-achieving students who were brought to the U.S. as children without documents. However, campaigners are concerned that the measure, which would extend to only a small number of students each year, will be held political hostage for reasons of ideology, not cost.

"Very few of the students we're talking about currently attend college because of the high Out-of-State rates," says Melanie Benesh, Youth Organizer with Voces de la Frontera. "By opening up college to this group, the state doesn't risk losing tuition revenue, it stands to gain from more high school students pursuing degrees and securing better paying jobs."

"Some on the anti-immigrant right have tried to rachet this up as a divisive issue," says Benesh. "It's a bogus argument, and that's why students will be rallying at the Capitol tomorrow and meeting with representatives to urge their support."
